A Matter of Respect- Zuma Spear Controversy.

“Only Jesus can be naked on the cross. You can’t do that to President Zuma…an insensitive creation by a white person”.” ( Barend La Grange, vandal of Murray artwork)

Well, with so many interesting debates going on about censorship, racism, cultural ethics and the nature and purpose  of art, who has time to worry about unfinished paintings?

I have thrown this topic into numerous lunch and dinner conversations, and am always delighted at the way it gets everyone hot under the collar! No more talk about the weather and the price of petrol!

Real thinking required :)

Please feel free to leave comments and engage with this fascinating debate! I personally go with Mike van Graans review of Brett Murray’s entire exhibition “Hail to the Thief”

This Barend guy is a lunatic! His justification for defacing artwork that he doesn’t agree with shows his complete misunderstanding of freedom of speech and expression. He ‘won’t allow that conflict can start again’ so commits vandalism to express his feelings in direct response someone expressing their feelings. It’s this kind of narrow-mindedness that created the South Africa of the apartheid years and the years ever since Mr. Mandela’s retirement, irrespective of the colour of the person or political viewpoint!! I fear the worst for South Africa …

Man, wish i had time to write down my thoughts on this one. But i think it would fill up a small book. Wish i could share several extra large coffees with you in person, and maybe some more people and talk about this. So so many implications and aspects to this. Wonderful that there is still art out there, that really sends a roar through society in a big way. Great art doing what it is supposed to do…
